Yes. If you are local to Spokane, Washington and would like to meet live, please reach out at celestemdavis{at}gmail{dot}com.

HOW OFTEN DO WE MEET?

Typically, people meet with their spiritual companion once per month for as long as they want. Some people see the same spiritual companion monthly for 20 years or more, some stop by and move on after a few sessions as they feel called. I’m happy to flow with whatever you need.

During my faith transition, I met with a spiritual companion twice a month for a year. Now I meet with my spiritual director once monthly.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ON MY MIND THAT WEEK TO TALK ABOUT?

I am always prepared with writing prompts, meditations, art exercises and thought experiments if you don’t have anything in particular to discuss. I am also happy to sit with you in silence if that is what you need. Silence is a great teacher.

WHAT OTHER SESSION OPTIONS ARE THERE?

The great thing about spiritual companionship is how open and exploratory it is. If you are looking for a more structured session, here are some options:

  • Creativity as spiritual practice. If you book a creating session, we start out with a guided meditation, then listen to some music with the camera off as you draw, write, dance or in some way physically manifest whatever is coming up for you. Then we talk about what came up.
  • Discernment. Often when we have a decision to make we consult experts, our friends, podcasts, but we don’t think to take the time to intimately consult our own inner wisdom. I have several discernment practices that can greatly help connect you to your inner wisdom if you have a decision to make.
  • Deconstruction/Reconstruction. If you are in a time of spiritual transition, it can be very helpful to journal out what ideas and beliefs specifically you are deconstructing and envision what it is you would like to reconstruct. We can do this about God, faith, prayer, gratitude, scripture or any other belief.

If you would like to book one of these more structured sessions- please let me know at the time of booking.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FOR OUR FIRST SESSION?

As is the case for every session, we will begin with a grounding exercise.

Then for our first session, I like to get to know you. I will try get a lay of the land in terms of your values, spirituality, pain points and beliefs. I’ll ask about your goals and what you’d like to get out of our sessions together, or just that session in particular.

Or if you prefer trying out a more structured session for your first session (see the question above), we can do that too.

WHAT IF I'M NOT SPIRITUAL?

Spirituality is a word that means lots of different things to different people. Whether you offer that label to yourself or not makes no difference to me. I am just as comfortable working with atheists and non-religionists and I am with deists.

Often for those raised in a high demand religion, any and all forms of spirituality take on an unsavory flavor upon leaving that religion. I fully understand and respect that. Together we will get curious as we deconstruct and reconstruct values and sources of connection.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SPIRITUALITY?

I think of spirituality as depth and connection.

I wrote this poem to sum up my thoughts:

What is spirituality?

a deepening. a ripening. a peeling back. a plummet. a descent below the surface. a sinking.

There are innumerable access points-

a song. a life. a death. a turtle. joy. anger. a hobby. grief. vulnerability. a leaf. intimacy. silence. a wave. an atom. a planet. a friend. an enemy. a breath. a longing. a flower. art.

Pick one. Go deep enough and you’ll hit it-

the realm that exists

under the surface. beyond the busyness. behind the external. under labels and judgments.

It requires no specific beliefs. demands no passwords or prerequisites. asks no sacrifice.

It doesn’t worry itself over what you call it. cares not if you believe in it.

It is merely a noticing,

a descending

into essence.

DO YOU ONLY SEE PEOPLE IN FAITH TRANSITION?

No. I am happy to sit with anyone who wants my companionship. My spiritual director training program trained us specifically to be able to companion any belief, however different from our own. I am not here to persuade anyone into our out of any particular religion or set of beliefs. I’m just here to hold space, and I’m happy to do that for anyone who may find it helpful.

WHERE DID YOU RECEIVE YOUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTION TRAINING?

I graduated from the interfaith spiritual director program at The Chaplaincy Institute in Berkley, California. My program included a year of coursework and a year of practicum training with supervision.
